On Thursday March 20 at Mayfair Farms in West Orange from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm Jamas Hosted the Black and White Scholarship Ball.
The students looked wonderful that evening. The young ladies 6th thru 12th grade wore beautiful white gowns and the girls 5th grade and under wore black and white or white. All of the gentlemen wore classic black tuxedos and looked very sharp and handsome. The students had to learn the waltz and danced that evening with partners.
After dinner several awards were given out to deserving students.
An essay competition where students had to writee an essay on the topic titled; "What are the benefits of a private school education vs. a public school education and could they change your life in today's society?"
After the names were announced of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, each had to read their essays to everyone. All of them did a very good job reading them.
3rd place - Imani Gray
2nd place - Amina Brantley
1st Place - Sumayyah Townsend
Ms.Sumayyah Townsend was also awarded the first Iola Joan Ayesha Cummings Scholarship. She was awarded this Scholarship for her academics, community service, and outstanding achievements; because of her ticket and ad sale amounts and her etiquette accumaltive points she also won as Queen of the B/W ball. Because of her outstanding behavior, Sumayyah also won the Young Lady of Class Award.
Ms. Amina Brantley was a very close second for the queen and for the Young Lady of Class Award. We hope that these two young ladies will continue to carry themselves as classy young ladies and remain a fine example to the other young ladies.
We do not want to leave the young men out. The Most Distingiushed Gentleman Award was given to Mr. Shyheim Smith. He was chosen by Mr. Chisolm the male empowerment coach and some of his teachers for this award. When asked whom should receive this honor, without hesitation everyone said Shyheim Smith.
The King of the B/W Ball went to Mr. Daruis Chisolm. Mr. Chisolm was also an honorable mention for his high academics and outstanding achievements.
There was also a special ceremony (somewhat emotional) for our graduating eighth grade students.
Parents said a few words to their eighth grader as well a gave them a gift from the heart.
Once the program was concluded, the dance floor was turned over to the students where they all had a great time dancing.
We are already preparing for next year's event, only this time this event will be a cotillion. Stay tuned for further details.
All Scolarships will be given to the winners at the Awards Dinner in May,
2008.
On behalf of the scholarship committe, the PTO, the Jamas students, parents, Mrs Williams, and the scholarship recipients,we would like to say Thank You for your contributions and ads and support. All monies went to the Scholarship Fund.
Since there was a poor response for Girl Scouts, those that did turn in applications will merge with another troop nearby. I aplogize for any inconvience.
Also, due to the lack of response for the cub/boy scouts, we are not accepting applications right now, however we will try again in the fall.
